City Announces New Parks & Recreation Director
The City is pleased to announce our new Parks and Recreation Director, Chris Smith. Chris has been with the City of Grapevine for 25 years in various capacities with the Parks and Recreation department. He began his career with the City as the Fitness Coordinator at the original Community Activities Center. He was then promoted to the Aquatic Supervisor, Recreation Superintendent, and then Deputy Director - where he has served for the past eight years. Chris is a lifelong resident of North Texas. He grew up in Hurst and moved to Grapevine in 2005. He received both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from the University of North Texas in Kinesiology. Prior to being hired by the City of Grapevine in 1997, he worked in the Tarrant County College and Dallas County Community College Districts. Chris has a passion for outdoor adventure activities, including mountain biking, hunting, fishing, kayaking, and camping. You may also find him participating in organized adult soccer, basketball, volleyball, and softball leagues. He and his wife, Amy, have two children. Chris said he is both humbled and honored to serve as Director of the department.

Learn about the iNaturalist app for September BioBlitz – Tomorrow, August 25
On Thursday, August 25, learn all about the iNaturalist app which will be needed to participate in our annual September BioBlitz. During the month of September, participants will use the iNaturalist app, to find and document pollinator-friendly plants and pollinators. It’s a campaign to see who can make the most observations, engage the most people and promote pollinator awareness and education. The results make an impact on awareness of pollinators nationally and for those who participate. Results also help us know what pollinator and plant species are in our parks and help us plan for how to protect them and promote biodiversity. Date/Time: Thursday, August 25, 6 - 7 pm

Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz – September 1 - 30
Keep Grapevine Beautiful and Grapevine Parks and Recreation are partnering to host an event that kicks off our month-long Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz. As a Bee City USA affiliate, the City of Grapevine is dedicated to increasing the pollinator population and habitats. Join us at the Parr Park Rotary pavilion to find and document pollinator-friendly plants and pollinators using the iNaturalist app on your smartphone. iNaturalist shares your findings with local and global scientific data repositories to assist scientists with preserving and building the world pollinator population. Understanding Medicare – Thursday, August 25 - FREE
Join local, independent, insurance agent, Mark Bilgere, for an informative and entertaining look at Medicare. Mark will explain how and when you may enroll in Medicare if you are nearing age 65. He will also discuss the different options available to Medicare beneficiaries, i.e. supplements, advantage plans, and prescription drug plans. In addition to the presentation, a question and answer session and the opportunity for honest input about the Medicare system will take place. All are welcome. No registration is required.

Stitch Craft Circle: Needlepoint, Embroidery, and Cross Stitch – Saturday, August 27
Bring your favorite needlepoint, embroidery, or cross stitch project to work on with your fellow circle of needlework crafters. We will also have small practice projects available for use by anyone who would like to join. All skill levels are welcome. The Library always accepts and appreciates donations of extra materials for future sessions. No registration required.

Keep Grapevine Beautiful Gives Grant – September 5 – October 3
The Keep Grapevine Beautiful Gives Grant provides funding for litter prevention, waste reduction, and/or beautification projects. Your school, business, or organization may receive up to $3,000 to assist with your project. Examples of previous projects include the purchase of water bottle filling stations, trash carts, and landscape improvements. Applications will be accepted from September 5 through October 3 for the Keep Grapevine Beautiful Gives Grant program, sponsored by Sam Pack’s Five Star Subaru-Grapevine. Fall Family Adventure Campout – Saturday, September 24
