[ARCHIVED] Blue Heron Rescued

man releasing Blue Heron at lake

On the final day of April, 2021, Grapevine Animal Services Officer Wes Milner was called to a home where an injured bird was in someone's carport. Milner quickly realized the blue heron had fishing wire tangled around one of her legs and one of her wings. The wire made it difficult for the bird to walk and impossible to fly.

Milner transported the Blue Heron to Southlake Animal Hospital, where the fishing wire was removed and the bird was medically cleared for release. Milner drove to the lake to set her free.

Grapevine Animal Services not only works with and rescued dogs, cats and other domestic animals - they also frequently respond to calls about wildlife in the area. It is common for them to take calls about birds, bats, bobcats, opossums and snakes.

While this Blue Heron was able to be saved, thanks to the homeowner who reported her, this type of injury can be avoided if we all help keep our lake parks clean. While we urge everyone to pick up their own trash, we encourage our community to do a little extra, and pick up a few additional pieces of trash each time they are out. The more we work together, the better we can live in harmony with animals and wildlife.
