Grateful only begins to describe the moment Senior Officer RJ Hudson is released from the hospital. Doctors, nurses, therapists, friends, family, and a stream of north Texas police officers so long -- people had to circle around the building -- lined up to offer well-wishes to Hudson as he departed from Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Grapevine on Wednesday, November 22, 2017.
On the morning of October 19, 2017, Sr. Ofc. Hudson was going after a speeding car on southbound SH-121 near Hall-Johnson Road when an SUV swerved into his lane and hit his motorcycle. Hudson was transported to the hospital with numerous internal injuries, broken bones, and lacerations. Physicians initially estimated he could begin physical therapy in four to six weeks. However, Sr. Ofc. Hudson proved he was ready on Day 11, and spent the remainder of his time pushing through pain, and challenging himself to improve his mobility.
With family, friends, hospital staff, and Grapevine Police officers and personnel by his side, Sr. Ofc. Hudson made outstanding progress with his movement, and began making a plan to go home. The target date: November 22nd, the day before Thanksgiving. Sr. Ofc. Hudson and his medical team succeeded, departing from the hospital after a news conference and special send-off by loved ones.
The Hudson family personally wishes to thank all Grapevine Police personnel, including officers, dispatchers, jailers, chaplains, volunteers, and alumni association members, as well as Grapevine Fire personnel, police officers from surrounding cities, Grapevine city leaders, and everyone at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Grapevine who continued to offer support daily. The Hudsons also appreciate gifts from the Grapevine Shield Foundation, Peace Officers’ Angels Foundation, GoFundMe donors, Remember the Fallen Heroes, Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA), Frisco Police Officers Association, and all of the Grapevine Police spouses, who brought up meals for Sr. Ofc. Hudson's family.
Sr. Ofc. Hudson will continue his recovery at home. He hopes to be back at work by early next Spring.
