Our shelter is always appreciative of donations. What do we do with such a precious gift, you may ask? Donations from animal-loving people made the impossible possible. The pup we are going to tell you about below would not have had the second chance she so desperately needed without generous monetary gifts. We also have the kind and knowledgable veterinary staff to thank as well as shelter employees and volunteers.
Peggy arrived to Grapevine Animal Services as a stray. She was found by some people in one of the local parks. It was clear right away that Peggy was going to need some EXTRA special attention. You see, when the dog who came to be known as Tri-Pod, Peggy, and 3 1/4, was carried through our doors, we immediately noticed that she was missing part of her right front leg. And the injury had not been taken care of. Somehow she survived having her leg severed off at the elbow leaving a damaged and unhealed stump.
Peggy was examined by our veterinarians at Northwest Animal Hospital. She was placed on antibiotics and pain medicine while plans for surgery were made. When no one came to reclaim the sweet pup, we sent her for sterilization and surgery to "clean up" the damaged leg. Drs. Steinle and Crocker performed x-rays to ensure the best course of action. Luckily, infection hadn't moved into the bone so Peggy got to keep a little nubbin of her leg and made the surgery a bit easier. The grooming staff at the animal hospital gave Peggy a bath and beautiful haircut. The surgical procedures were completed with no complications. Unfortunately, Peggy was also diagnosed with Heartworm Disease. Heartworm Disease is very prevalent in North Texas and without monthly heartworm preventative, it is only a matter of time before a pup is infected through the bite of a mosquito.
After recovering in the care of the shelter employees and volunteers (with some good pain meds on board), Peggy returned to the veterinarian for heartworm treatment. Throughout her whole ordeal, the pain she endured, Peggy always had her darling personality shining through. Peggy was able to be placed up for adoption.
We are happy to report that Peggy received a loving family and they can't imagine life without her.
